Autumn Update from the Headteacher

We enjoyed a busy first half-term of the year with a highlight being the start of 16-19 courses at Addington High School.  Our Sixth Form learning centre is much appreciated by the Year 12 pupils and the other main facility development of the summer – the Graphics Studio – is also a quality investment.  It is really good that younger pupils can see the standard of work produced by Year 12 pupils in such areas as Media, Art, Music Technology and Graphics, and work alongside them.

The Sixth Form link with Archbishop Tenison’s is proving very

productive and we continue our links with Trinity School and the BRIT School.  Nick Williams (Principal of the BRIT) visited our Governing Body to confirm the strong relationship between the schools.  We are waiting to see how the Coalition Government will present options for schools as we decide on next steps in developing a formal relationship.

Thanks to parents/carers for a strong turnout at the Academic Review Day and for completing our questionnaire.  You gave us a big vote of support.  97% (from 460 returns) said they were satisfied with the school and 44% were very satisfied.  There was a lot in the survey for us to think about, including better use of the planner and a review of homework.

Our Governors spent another day in school and spent further time interviewing pupils.  Their main findings backed up parents’/carers’ views and I was really pleased that pupils emphasised how much choice they have at AHS regarding out of lesson activities.  These include a number of trips and residentials (including for new courses like Leisure & Tourism and Outdoor Education) and the Music trip to Euro Disney, Paris, at the start of half-term was a real success.  Pupils and staff are also looking forward to the Barcelona trip.

As ever, there is lots going on, with the focus on Year 11 English and Maths GCSE exams to keep us busy in November.

National Poetry Day

To celebrate National Poetry Day, which was on the theme of 'Home' this year, the Year 7s took part in a poetry competition where they were asked to write a poem about life on their desert island or a 'room' in their head.  The results were an excellent mix of poems from all English classes that demonstrated great creativity from the students.
